Child support question

When is it acceptable to file for child support? If any

My ex-partner and I planned to have a child... 4 months into the pregnancy he became abusive and is now incarcerated... I delivered a healthy baby boy... I am a 28yr old school teacher and this is my only child and I'm torn between if I should file or not?

Update he only spent 6 months in jail he will be released next month.

One day I would like for him to meet his son just not right now he has to get help first before I put my son in any danger
