I think it makes them feel closer because it's another way of showing trust and revealing yourself. Like if you and a SO are sharing insecurities or family secrets or something, you would feel close to them because they chose to divulge this information to you and put their trust in you that you wont misuse the information. It's similar to sex. You are revealing your body and any insecurities you might have with this person and they are doing the same with you.
