Gestational diabetes
Warning: this is going to be a long post. My hopes for this post is to give advice, knowledge, and comfort. I failed my 24 glucose blood test by .1 and this flagged my midwives to do the 3 hour glucose test. I failed the fasting levels by .2, but the rest were fine. At my 29 week appointment I was measuring 5 weeks ahead and they were worried about babes size. I had a sizing ultrasound and he was measuring in the 96% for weight. My midwives were not too concerned but suggested I go to the hospital diabetes clinic just to be sure everything was okay. It was incredibly overwhelming; I had to test my blood 7 times a day, pee on a stick at morning and night and record everything I ate. After a week of doing this my fasting levels were quite high in the morning, and I was passed along to a diabetic nurse. Delivery of bad news is so crucial in these kinds of cases. I was made to feel guilty, told everything that would be wrong with my baby boy if I did not go on insulin this instance, and was rushed through the appointment like I wasn’t even a human being. I was so overwhelmed with everything; I had to inject insulin twice a day, take oral medication 3 times a day, test 7x a day, and keep track of everything still. I felt like I had no support besides my husband and felt so scared. Gestational diabetes is made out to sound so awful and taboo, but the truth is ladies, SOMETIMES YOU CANNOT CONTROL IT. No matter what I did with my diet, exercise, etc my body was not processing things properly. It’s OK to have to take insulin, it’s okay to feel scared and alone, it’s okay to have gestational diabetes. I am going to have to do this for the rest of pregnancy, and will have to be induced early. I try to find the positives! I get extra ultrasounds to check his size, and see his sweet face. I also get to meet him a little sooner as they will induce me at 38 weeks! I have learned a lot through this process and I am always available to answer questions through messages etc. Less than 8 weeks till I get to meet this nugget and put it all behind me.
