Culture Clash Gift
The recent controversy about the symbolism of the confederate flag reminded of an advice column I read awhile back. I can't find it now, but here's the gist of it.
An American Jewish family is fostering a teenage exchange student from India. Upon arrival she gives gifts to everyone, and one of the daughters receives a nice necklace… with a carved swastika charm on it. There was absolutely no offense intended by the gift, and In India that symbol has a positive meaning of auspiciousness or good luck. However, she obviously can't wear it. What should she do?
