Question

So has anyone else tests come back with a low platelet count? Mine has been dropping since around week 32 and when I was admitted 2 weeks ago for a kidney stone it got as low as 77. Had a recheck done today should have the results early next week but I'm getting nervous. If it continues to drop there is a good chance that an epidural is out of the question and god forbid I need a c-section they will need to give general.

I have ITP which means a lower than normal platelet count even non pregnant. It's usually mild but now I'm down to 54 and due to start steroids on Monday when I'll be 36 weeks and I have weekly blood tests. You need them higher, at least around 80 but more likely 100 in the US for any spinal analgesics, so they can raise it that way. They'll keep an eye and check for antibodies etc. If the steroids don't raise it enough you can have IvIG infusion or a platelet transfusion, though that is expensive and doesn't last as long so it's not the primary response. A normal platelet count in the 150-400 range is way more than we need, so don't be frightened about a count below that, they just are extra cautious because they don't want to risk a spinal haematoma. It's rare anyway but that's why 100 is probably the limit (I'm in the UK now and it varies but I was in the US and that's what I was advised).
