I totally understand where you come from, i had only had sex with my ex who i dated for 3 years, after a year of no sex I’ve currently start having sex with someone new, it took me a year to start having sex!!!! if it’s been crossing your mind it because you want some sex you won’t know if your truly ready until you in the moment,

Only you can answer that. You will know when you feel ready. It might take a matter of days, weeks, months or even years. (Years might be exaggerating it LOL) 
And about the awkward issue, I think it’s always awkward at the start of something new
