Moving in to an apartment

So me and my boyfriend are looking to get an apartment for the next year till we have the money to get a house. I was extremely excited until every person I talked to said apartments are trashy and scary. So now I’m struggling to feel like this is a good idea.. does anyone on here and live in an apartment? What are your biggest concerns/ stories from living in one. Are they really that bad? I went online and it got 4/5 stars so I thought that was good but all I hear from family and friends is “I heard there’s a lot of drug deals that happen there.” “Scary people live there.” And I’m freaking out. I don’t wanna be scared to live somewhere.. someone please help me out
