Success with IUI and low sperm count???

My husband and I are beginning the assisted fertility journey. His urologist said we have a very small chance of conceiving naturally and suggested I start the process with my insurance to go through the testing for IVF. His first SA was 5 million count and his last was 1.9 million. Good news, he has healthy active swimmers though! She said she feels VERY optimistic of one round of IVF being successful. But of course, money is an issue. My insurance covers 0% of IVF but does cover 50% of all other related fertility (including IUI). I don’t want to waste money and time, but feel like we should give IUI a chance. Has anyone had success with IUI and low sperm count??? From all preliminary tests, I’m healthy. I have been pregnant before and have super predictable/on time cycles with consistent ovulation.

My clinic would not do iui with a count that low. Their cut off is 10M. I would proceed right to ivf.

My clinic recommends 5M post wash for IUI. My husband had 18M once and after wash it was 6M so you have to expect more than half will be semen, debris, and unhealthy sperm which means your chances of conceiving by IUI is very low...

Do you know what is causing the low count and how you can treat it? There could be medication/ treatment to improve the count and then do IUI.

My husbands counts were 7 mil and we went straight to ivf.

Depending on your age, your fertility health, & how long you’re willing to try naturally all factor in. My husband had a vasectomy reversal and has had low counts since. Our current counts are 13.2 million with 20% motility. We were told ivf with icsi is pretty much our only shot. They will not even attempt iui without a count of 10 mill post wash. We were told you lose about 50% with the wash. So we would need counts at or above 20 mill to even try. And with low motility it’s a waste of time. I’ve seen a few success stories on here with lower counts, but it’s definitely not the average. Good luck with your decision!❤️
