First Time Tampon User

Hi everyone. I’m 18 and have never used a tampon before or had anything “in there” if you know what I mean. My period is really heavy though so i’m starting to considering using them. Can anyone give me some tips? If I should try to use them while on my period or wait till i’m off or anything?
