Juggling two families for holidays

So it’s thanksgiving. Me and my boyfriend always plan to spend time with my family and his. It’s kind of difficult to juggle two families during a holiday. We’ll do about 4 hours at one then the rest at the other. But today it ran a little long at my family’s so we didn’t make dinner at my boyfriend’s and his family got really upset. Any suggestions for making the holidays smoother and better for everyone?
