When you pick out your childs name, did you select a name based upon your childs race?

Question

I want to prove a point to my husband who feels that more people select a childs name based upon their childs race versus just liking a certain name. Please answer honestly.

I don’t know about ‘race’, but cultural background, sure. My husband’s from an Irish family so we gave our son an Irish name. 
Giving your kids names that are associated with another culture or another gender may cause them inconvenience as they get older (eg people asking a lot of questions, expecting them to look/be different, possibly even causing offence to people of that culture), so I wouldn’t personally do it.

I love the name Mateo but my husband and I are both white and we don’t feel like it’s appropriate to use it since neither of us is Hispanic or Spanish speaking.

Yes I’m white and Hispanic (I say Hispanic lightly because tbh I’m white washed) don’t consider myself to have much culture. 
My boyfriend and father of our daughter is 100% Indian (Gujarat) and is a first generation citizen to be born in the US. 
Because of this I want to give our daughter a beautiful Hindu/ Gujarati name. I think we may actually have one picked out! Same for all our future children, I want them to have an ethnic background attached to their name. One day when she grows up and get married I still want them to be attached to her identity! She may not marry an Indian man, and in that case I want people to ask about her name... what it means, it’s origin etc. 
I’m kinda bored of seeing the same typical “white baby names” so this was a really easy decision to make in my opinion. I find a lot of names to be really cute but I wouldn’t make my children anything other than Hindu/ Gujarat based names.

For me it wasn't about race, but more about what suits the surname and reflects your culture if you're sentimental about these things.

Kind of? Like others said it’s more about culture than race. My husband and I are white Anglo-Europeans and we look it. 
So despite the fact that I adore Japanese names, and our favorite boys name is a Indian sounding but historically Hun name, we are planning to name our kids classic irish and Scottish names. It doesn’t feel appropriate to have a child named Motoko when we’re two white people who have never even been to japan. The most not-our-culture we’re getting is a Russian spelling and pronunciation of a common girls name if we have two girls.

My babies will have an Indian last name, which I don’t share because I kept my maiden name. We’ve agreed to name them classic Irish/British family names so there’s less confusion as to who their mother is. 😂 we’ve come up with beautiful names that blend our cultures perfectly, and are a little of both of us.
I believe naming my child something not from our own culture is inauthentic and cultural appropriation. I personally wouldn’t do it.

Well it matters to a certain extent, in my opinion. There are some beautiful names out there but they aren’t from my culture, so I’m not about to appropriate it just because I think it sounds nice or I like the meaning.  I’d never choose one from a culture that isn’t mine, and I really think it’s cultural appropriation when people do. 
I’m Cree, my husband is white. We’ve talked about giving our child a Cree middle name but haven’t been able to find one we both like.

I choose a name based off signs I received durning my child’s pregnancy. Like for my daughter she was so calm and an easy delivery even know til this day she’s calm and the easiest child. She moved a lot for my mom so I gave my mom the honor to name her. Their bond til this day is tight as glue. My son wasn’t bad and me and his father are both black but we made a bet if it’s a girl I choose and if it’s a boy he chooses so turns out it was a boy and my son is named after his father favorite basketball player 🤦🏾‍♀️ 😂 but it works tho. And for my third I gave my husband the honor of naming his child (this is his first) so if it’s a girl it’s a mixture of his mother and sister name together and I get to choose middle name and the same for a boy I get to choose middle name and it’ll be my brothers name. 
It’s solely up to you tho. Me I just tell, scream and calmly say their names to see House it sounds and see if there’s a ring to it 😂

It wasn't a factor for me at all. I will say though, I would give him a different name if he were black, simply because the name I chose can have a negative connotation for some people, and society is already really harsh on black men. I wouldn't want to make it harder on my son.

Yes! My fiancé is Mexican/Cuban with dark features (black hair and dark skin) and im German with light features (blonde hair and very white). I figured my son would turn out looking dark like his dad since it’s dominant but I told him we should name our son something that goes with dark and light features instead of a Spanish name (he liked Javier with the last name Hernandez). 
I’m glad we didn’t name our boy Javier because he’s now 1 and the only dark features he has are his eyelashes and brown eyes lol. He honestly would have looked kind of weird saying his name was Javier Hernandez when he doesn’t look Mexican or Cuban at all.
