Addicted babies - what should happen to the mother?
Babies who survive their mother abusing drugs during pregnancy are at a higher risk of SIDS, birth defects, and plenty of long term effects (varies depending on what drugs were used), including:
- Learning disabilities
- Behavioural issues
- Depression
- Increased anxiety
- Schizophrenia
- Heart disease in adults
- Parkinson’s disease in adults
- Cognitive delays
- Difficultly holding jobs
- Difficultly maintaining relationships
- Poor memory
- Increased risk of drug abuse
And more.
What do you think should happen to the mother if their baby is born addicted? Should she face jail time, lose parental rights and custody, have supervised visits? Should the baby be put into care or into the care of another family member? Should the baby be allowed to live with the mother? What are your thoughts?
