Confused about breast shells?

I keep seeing them online, but am not sure if this is a necessity purchase or how they even work? Are they just a different version of nipple pads or do they do something different?

If we are talking about the same thing, I used them to catch my milk. I dont have to wear the pads to make sure I dont leak. I love them. I also have inverted nipples so it helps bring them out, so I don't have to use a nipple shield to fees.

I used breast shells to keep my bra/shirt from touching my nipples when they were very sore. 
They did nothing for my flat nipples. Nipple shields helped with that as well as pumping for a minute to draw them out and also just “training” from nursing over a long enough period of time. 
I also never collected much milk wearing the shells.

They are for inverted nipples, that you'd wear in your bra to correct your nipple before breastfeeding.
