First iui after 1 year 6 mos of trying

My husband and I have been trying for baby #1 for 17 months now with no success. I had a laparoscopy Jan of last year to remove endo and I’ve had an hsg test, hubby has had a semen analysis and all normal. My GYN has recommended we do IUI and basically told me to go home and do my own opk tests and call them when I have a surge and they will schedule for the following day. This seemed bizarre to me because I feel there isn’t any accuracy - opks have always given me a surge but at weird times. (For example, I use the digital clear blue and its supposed to give a “high” reading a couple days before but I never get high. I get a blank circle and then randomly one day I get the surge.) is this normal to do an IUI first cycle without medication and without any sort of monitoring from the doctors side?
