Like others have said, it's toxic and manipulative to say that to get some to be with you. I think the phrasing of your question kind of implied that situation ("someone is dating you just because you said"). I would say it's probably not manipulative if you're telling someone you're already with because you probably are genuinely in need of help, in which case they should refer you to a professional. However, even if this is the case, I would say that the relationship is still unhealthy, because both people should be in a relatively good place in all aspects of health, especially emotional and mental (just my personal opinion).

Context: my friend has been depressed for a long time, and her ex boyfriend who cheated on her in the past tried contacting her because she was self harming (starving herself, cutting etc.) and when he tried to stop her, she said she would kill herself. He then said “I love you! Baby please chill!” And then she asked if they were together again. And he said “if it will get you to stop all of this, yes.”

We need more context than that. If my boyfriend started saying that after an argument I’d consider that unhealthy and toxic, because they’re manipulating you into staying. If he said it and actually meant it then I’d get him professional help. It completely depends on the situation.

I've been in a similar situation, and I can say it's VERY toxic, it fucked me up really bad. The person saying that must look for professional help, and the other must think about himself/herself first, it's okay to try to help, but it can consume you, if that's the case, leave.
