Do your kids talk back?

My boyfriend was brought up to not talk back to adults. .. well my kids talk back.. I raised my kids alone do to my ex going to jail... and all my focus was on his addiction and trying keep him alive.. anyway my oldest don't do drugs she's now in college she's not pregnant so I believe so far I didn't do so bad.. they respect other people except my boyfriend and I. . My oldest likes him! My youngest doesn't do anyone else have this issue?  How do you adjust with new boyfriend and your kids?  This is new to me.

Talking back is disrespectful and should not be tolerated.  Even more concerning is that it seems your kids think they have the right to weigh in or have an opinion about your relationship and who you date.  You're THEIR mother, not the other way around.

Your bf was brought up correctly in my opinion. You have to fix your kids now to get them to respect him AND yourself. No man wants to come into a family with no authority over the kids who disrespect him and the mother/gf not do anything about it. It's not fair to him. If he's a good one you should work very hard at getting your kids to respect him and making sure that he sees your effort. I'm not trying to bash you at all I know you did your best!!

I don't think talking back means you did something wrong. I try not to ever say things like "you can't have it because I said so". I don't think children develop proper reasoning skills that way. Instead if you say something like "you can't have ice cream now because dinner is in half an hour". Then they say "I promise I'll eat my dinner after ice cream". I then say " ice cream is for after dinner". They get creative with their thinking and start to develop solving problem skills. Kids will challenge you I don't think is a bad thing. It teaches them how to argue in appropriate way.

There are a lot of children who are little angels at home because parents are strict and don't let their children say what they want. Those same children then go out and rebel because the parents never taught the child what is appropriate. They get away with things in the world, and not at home, children will manipulate.

I would say your boyfriend should be a friend to your children. While you still do all the parenting.

Yes and no - there is a difference in my world between talking back and a healthy debate/discussion/expression of feelings. My husband tolerates none of it but is slowly converting lol I allow my son to speak up, but he is required to speak respectfully towards us at all times even if he's angry or upset with us. I love that he ha his own thoughts and voice, that he's learning to express himself and argue/debate appropriately while still being respectful and not using bad language or name calling.

I feel like my parents expected my siblings and I to talk back, for us we would stand our ground and they would tell us if it was too far 
I respect them and other adults but on a more personal level.
