My family got into a heated debate while discussing Chrissy Teigen and John Legends decision to have their first child be female. They purposely chose to implant the female embryo through IVF . Some of my family members felt like this was “playing God” and was weird. They indicated it should be left up to fate. Others thought that it didn’t matter, and why not let parents decide what they want for their own family. What are your thoughts??

It’s IVF, let’s leave God out of science

I don’t care what others do, but it’s not something I would do. I really don’t see the point though unless they’re carrying a genetic disease that’s more common in one sex

Gods got nothing to do with it 🤷🏻♀️ if you wanna choose and you’re having ivf, cool. If you don’t, not a big deal. People make a big deal out of everything but this literally has no effect on anyone but the couple having the baby.

I only think it would be a bad situation if everyone out there could choose the sex of their baby and culturally society favored one sex over the other (like what happened with China's one child policy and no one wanted girls)...I think aborting based on gender should be illegal...but choosing an embryo to implant based on gender? Right now I don't see an issue simply because I see a pretty even split in parents wanting each gender and ivf isn't the common way of having babies.

It’s IVF, there’s not really anything “natural” or left to fate with IVF. If choosing the sex makes the experience a bit more fun or helps you bond, then I don’t see why not 🤷🏻♀️ I don’t think other people’s conception story is up for anyone to judge or debate.

I mean... some women choose specific traits for sperm donations like blue eyes, brown hair, athletic traits, tall, etc. why not pick which gender you have too? I mean if I could decide to have a boy and a girl when I have babies, oh hell yea I’m picking a boy and a girl.

We did ivf and did PGS testing which is how you find out the sex. We used it to find out the chromosomal make up of our embryos and then choose to not select based on sex. For us yes we did feel a weirdness picking the sex. We felt we were already playing with nature enough. But, that being said. I don’t disagree with another couples choice to choose the sex of their baby. Ivf is already a whole bunch of weirdness. Going as far as choosing the sex i don’t think is as weird as some of the things I’ve done to have my ideal family haha.

I mean, it’s IVF so the playing God thing was out the window a while ago. I voted no, I don’t think it should be allowed. The strongest and most viable embryo should be chosen. The one with the greatest chances.

Left up to fate? It’s IVF. It’s scientific and calculated. Fate has nothing to do with it.

Pretty sure the only person who signed the checks for my IVF procedure was me. Unless god wants to pony up with his check book, he doesnt need to be brought up in this process.

Some of my family members felt like this was “playing God” and was weird. They indicated it should be left up to fate.

Others thought that it didn’t matter, and why not let parents decide what they want for their own family.

What are your thoughts??
