Is thumb sucking hereditary?

I’ve been sucking my thumb since I can remember, I’m 23 now. My cousin, who is also an adult, sucks her thumb too. I’m just wondering, is it something that can be passed on to my kids? I’m just worried that they’re gonna grow up & have teeth like mine & need years of braces 😣

I would say children are a lot “monkey see monkey do” so if you have a habit you don’t want them learning that you will have to work on it and be more conscious of it. For you it’s probably a comfort thing so maybe replace that with chewing gum when you feel anxious (just as an example, ultimately you have to find something that works for you) and finally babies naturally suck their thumb for comfort at times but normally grow out of it as it’s usually just a phase.

My dad sucked his thumb, I sucked my thumb, I wake up sometimes and find myself sucking. None of my kids sucked their thumbs but I also pushed the binkies.

I don’t think so. My mom had 5 kids, 2 of us sucked thumbs, 1 loved her binky, and 2 didn’t suck on anything. My mom wasn’t a thumbsucker. My college friend was a thumbsucker all her life and was rather disappointed when both of her kids were into binkies instead ha. Although I sucked my thumb and so does my son, kid literally popped out sucking his thumb.

I never did and neither did my ex or siblings but my twins did from 4 months. My oldest son didn’t either

That's a good question. I never sucked my thumb and neither of my children ever showed interest in it either. I'm curious now too if some genetic traits make one more dispositioned to do so
