Would you have your SO get the test?

Question

I did genetic testing and found out I’m a carrier of cystic fibrosis and they recommended getting my husband checked too to see if he is also a carrier (because baby can only get cystic fibrosis if he’s a carrier too). Doctor said they weren’t too worried about it all since we have a one year old together who doesn’t have it which shows that he most like doesn’t have the cystic fibrosis gene. I asked if he would get tested (for the just in case) but he’s deathly afraid of needles (like he full on cries and has a panic attack) and he refuses to get his blood drawn to find out. Is he being selfish in a way for not wanting to find out if he carries it? Or do you think he doesn’t have the gene since our son doesn’t have it?

There’s a 1 in 4 chance of carrying a baby with cystic fibrosis if you are both carriers. Your firstborn being born without it doesn’t automatically exclude the possibility of future children being born with it if he’s a carrier. Tell him to look away and focus his attention elsewhere and get the testing done. Many people are afraid of needles, but in my opinion it’s selfish not to do so when he is already aware you are a carrier.

Knowing if your child has CF in advance would help you be more prepared. I’ve personally never done the research but I have heard things like breast feeding for as long as possible are critical. 
I think I’d want him to get the test so you can be as informed as possible.

I was in the same boat with my daughter two years ago. I was a carrier and my husband is deathly afraid of needles. He would go to every appointment with me and after like the 5th doctor talked to him about it he agreed to get his blood drawn. Luckily he is not a carrier but maybe having your doctor talk to him about the benefits of knowing beforehand will give him the little push to get it done.

We found out yesterday that I’m a carrier for CF, and husband got his blood draw then and there.
Explain to your husband that either he gets his blood drawn like a grown ass man, or y’all will have to do a more invasive procedure that carries some risk for your baby (like CVS or amnio).  How selfish is he willing to be?  Is his willing to introduce a risk of miscarriage (even if it’s very small) to save him from a needle poke?
I sometimes pass out when I have blood drawn. Hell, I passed out when I saw a *dog* getting blood drawn. But I’ve had at least 15 vials of blood drawn so far for the sake of this fetus. Does he *realize* what you’re doing and sacrificing for your child? 
I just have no sympathy for whining about a blood draw, good lord.  Ask the doctor to stuff a Xanax in his mouth, strap him down, and poke him.

I would encourage him to have the testing done to be prepared, but at the same time there is currently no medical cure for cystic fibrosis. Whether or not he gets the testing done, there would still be no way to change the outcome. I personally know someone with cystic fibrosis and she has had a tough road with CF and lung and kidney transplants, many years of therapy and steroid treatments, etc. However, even if her parents knew many years ago that they were both carriers, the outcome of her life would be no different than it is today. 
Just stay positive and encourage him of the benefits of knowing the potential outcome, but I would not worry about forcing him if he does not want to be tested (even if it is for silly reasons such as fear of needles).

I would have a sit down with the doctor about just how important it is to know and have the doctor offer medication to make him zone out for the draw. I cannot do the dentist without meds, so I have a wonderful pill I take that makes me just not care about anything at all while I'm there. Before that, I would clench and tense up and have so much adrenaline pumping that the numbing meds/injections wouldn't take.

Yes. I am a carrier. I found out before I got pregnant. My husband then did his genetic testing and found out he wasn’t a carrier. Such a huge relief. 
He is an adult. It’s about the welfare of his child. Get the damn test.
