Craigslist scam?

I’m looking up apartments on Craigslist’s and was wondering how to know if it’s a scam? Maybe I’m too paranoid but i remember being in school and hearing about a craigslist killer 😭 it always stuck yo me this apartment looks real but only 580$ with free heat and hot water?? In a nice neighborhood so I’m a little skeptical of it how would i know if it was a scam?

Request to view the apartment. If they refuse or make some excuse like they are out of state but can mail the keys. It’s a scam. You can also try googling the address if you’re able to find the listing on other apartment rental sites like zillow or (if it’s not a single landlord) the rental company then it’s probably legit. But if you find the rental company I’d just directly go through their site. 
If you google the address and find the entire building is up for sale on a retailer site it is definitely a scam. Especially if the pictures are the same or the Craigs  listing has no pics.
Renting tips:
If you can, go with a buddy when viewing apartments or tell a few people where you are going and maybe set a time to check in. Try to check out the area before you go to view the apartment if it seems sketchy don’t go or at least don’t go alone. 
NEVER make a payment for a place until you are signing the lease and have the keys. When you pay you should be signing the lease and getting the keys. 
If someone asks for some form of payment before you can even see the place it is a scam. If they are claiming it’s an application fee this still should not be something you have to pay before seeing an apartment. Some landlords do charge application fees to cover background checks. But you should be able to view an apartment before applying to live there. 
Ask to have a copy of the lease to go over before you meet up to sign it and pay any fees & getting keys. A good lease contract tends to be long and you will want to read through it carefully so you can ask any questions you have about it. It’s a lot easier to go over the lease when you can give it some time to actually read it vs when you are signing the lease and have the landlord waiting which even if they aren’t rushing you can make you feel like you have to just skim it.

I'm apartment hunting too and I'm skeptical of any listing that doesn't have photos. The listing itself could be exactly what I'm looking for, but if doesn't have any photos I'm not interested. Also suspicious of anything that's more than a month old, but that's because of the area that we're looking at - listings come and go rather quickly, so if a listing has been sitting for a long time I'm quick to assume it's either a scam or a crappy place (one time I went to a listing and the whole of the apartment was smaller than my dorm room in college and a quarter of the "living room" was taken up because all of the doors opened up into it).

Is it a studio? Also go check the apartment but definitely not by yourself !! Have a guy go with you just in case.

There are housing scams on Craigslist. People will copy and paste fake house listings on Craigslist. Use a reliable website instead like Zillow.

Always call the place where it is before going like if it's a house look up the address on Google and call on it first
