Crib Mattresses?

Question

I'm looking at Walmart and Target mostly, trying to go find a good budget option. The crib we will most likely buy says that a 27.5" W x 52" D mattress will fit, which I guess is just a standard crib mattress? Not really sure what to look for. I've read that firm mattresses are supposed to be safer, but there are so many different materials, brands, and depths to choose from. Any suggestions??

Water proof mattresses!! There is one at Wal-Mart...the one i have has green owls on it. They dont absorb any liquid like pee, milk, juice...really anything.

I bought a waterproof matress that has an infant side (firmer) and a toddler side. The material didn't matter much to me since I was buy a mattress cover also so I picked a soft cotton one (also waterproof to be safe haha) and that's it.

I like foam mattresses because they’re so much lighter, which makes them a thousand times easier to change the sheets. I also like organic mattresses, or at least one that is “Greenguard Gold Certified” so it doesn’t release any toxic fumes. When you’re at the store, it’s good to physically touch each mattress to find one that feels firm to you, but also one that doesn’t have a plastic cover. The ones covered in plastic aren’t as comfortable and they’re sometimes more noisy when the baby moves, so it’s ideal just to buy a mattress protector to put on your mattress to protect it from spills/leaks. It’s also a good idea to find one that is dual sided so that you can use it as a toddler mattress when your baby gets older.

We bought our crib at Target, and just bought a no name mattress they had. It was like $60 or something. It’s plenty firm and hasn’t been an issue.
