Godparents

Do people still ask others to be their childs godparents anymore? I feel like the ones who I've heard of being asked dont realize what it means. I knew it's a religious thing but I also always hear of a godparent as being someone who will take care of child if something happens to the parents. Me and my boyfriend aren't religious but are debating on asking someone to be babies godparent in case something ever happens to us because the people we are thinking of would take better care of our child than either of our families would. They have a baby right now and our babies would be less than a year apart. They seem like the perfect family. Would you ask someone to be a godparent in a nonreligious way?
