A heads up, just in case. . . If the gunk you're cleaning out is dark/blackish it is ear mites, not wax. Use a moistened q-tip, and gently wipe the crap out. There's also drops to treat ear mites with, too. We do this with almost all of our fosters when we first get them. As far as cleaning after that. . .we rarely clean any of our kitties' ears, if you start to notice a fowl smell then I recommend shining a flash light in there and seeing if there's buildup.

Depends on build up. We have a cat who had a serious ear issue a little while back and the current owner couldn't afford to get it treated so it was just let go until we saw the state if her and offered to take her and give her the medical attention she needed. Now she doesn't clean her ears. Ask a vet for instruction on a proper way if the cats ears are very gucky, as build up can lead to blockage. 😀😀

Depends on how bad it is...when I took my stray inside she had very dirty earwax for about 2 weeks so I cleaned them then. But I haven't had a need to in the last 4 years...

Yes but u cant just go diggin around w a qtip, u could hurt them. I would use a warm washcloth. If its ears r really bad. Use warm water and a little bit of baby oil in a syringe. Mix it well then squirt it in their ear, everything will drain out, and just wipe it off w warm washcloth.
