TMI! Period after Miscarriage-HCG

Wondering if anyone had experienced what I am going through currently. I have a miscarriage on Dec. 27th (baby measuring 6weeks, I though I was 11). On Jan 25th my HCG was 47 and I started bleeding pretty heavy bright red (my periods are usually pretty light) on Jan. 28th for three days. On Feb. 2nd my HCG was 16. I called the doctor to ask about getting a period before HCG was under 5 and they said I wouldn’t have a true period until it was under 5. So what was the bleeding?! Should I count that as a period for tracking ovulation purposes?!
