Would you change your name?

So my father and I never had a good relationship. He was never abusive but he was absent and constantly in and out of my life. He always left me with his girlfriends at the time when I went to visit him. He never really cared for me. He only did one nice thing for me in my whole life. I had paid maternity leave because of him. Otherwise I would have gotten way less money for the 2 years I was home with my son. But that is it.
Now my partner of 6 years and I are talking about getting married in a few years. And I want to change my name to my partners name hypenated with my mom's and grandma's family name. I am really serious about it and I never liked my name because it is my father's family name.
I will probably change it but I am curious of everyone's opinion as my mom says I shouldnt do it. Because my dad did that one nice thing for me. But I say that is not enough. What are your thoughts?

I wouldn’t. I would just change my last name to my husbands last name because you are now his family and it would cause a ton of drama between not only you and your father but also unnecessary drama between your parents.

I have my dads last name. He’s never really been around. When both of my children were born, I gave them the same last name. My SO adopted them last summer, so now we no longer share the name. We’re not planning to marry for a few years, but I have every intention on changing my last name to his/theirs just so I don’t have a different last name. 
I wouldn’t hyphenate. Just use the reason that you want to share a last name with your child.

I would totally change my name, not even anything to do with your dad just the love you have for your partner. Especially if you plan to have kids with him!

Do what makes you happy.  My dad was a sack of shit when I was young.  We have a good relationship now, but I was named after him.  I have always wanted to change my name and intend to soon. Makes my mom upset when we talk about it, but she calls me by my chosen name anyway.

Granted yes he did do that ONE nice thing for you doesnt mean you should keep his last name, since he has come and gone in and outta your life.
