My crush

I need help, I have a crush on this 12th grade boy in my chem class who also happens to be one of my closest friends cousin. Just in case your wondering I’m in 11th! I don’t know how to approach him or tell my friend. It’s not easy just to randomly ask someone if they like dogs or if they did the hw last night especially since I’m shy. HELP
