F— Faulkner

I tend to do well in English. It’s usually the 1 thing that I can do, but lately, we‘ve been reading Faulkner. The streamiest of stream of conscience. The guy who couldn’t write time linearly (like most stories) if the lives of the 3 women he had affairs with (while he was married) were on the line.

I can’t do it. According to my teacher, I have a good understanding of it, sometimes I can even pick up on subtle things. But the assignments, which I keep failing, say otherwise. Like wtf?? Apparently I „overthink“ things in the incredibly unclear novel.

I don’t know what to do!! My teacher will just tell me to do better next time or done other bs. I hate these books like I’ve never hated any novel before!!

That’s just bad teaching on her part because literature can be interpreted in many ways. There is no one answer. I guess what she is looking for is the best answer, which is probably something she interpreted.

Is it a semester of Faulkner or are you reading one particular work?

Yes, that would be frustrating. Does it involve writing papers? Oftentimes I have found that people fall into summarizing more than analyzing. Just something to check if that’s the type of work you have to do.

I love both of those!! I teach English but I only teach writing now and really miss the lit side. Faulkner definitely has a unique style but I love the gothic elements.
