Sent to collections for medical bills

I had my son in January 2018 and was so busy with nursing school, work, new baby, etc I never paid my medical bills. I called today about a different bill and asked if I could catch up on previous bills and they said they where sent to collection in August 2018 but it’s been over 6 months and it’s not on my credit report? And I haven’t received anything in paper I think they e tried to call but I haven’t answered. Should I just ignore them? I can’t afford it anyways...
