Should I tell them I’m big?

Question

I just got my BFP today and after some long research, I found an OBGYN with great reviews that I’m interested in. When I call tomorrow to make my first appointment, should I tell them that I’m obese? I’m 5’4 and 280lbs. I’ve heard before that doctors can turn you away for your size and I don’t want to risk that embarrassment buuuut I also don’t really want to tell them over the phone. 🤔😕

I’m the same size as you and I would’ve never thought I need to mention that to a new doctor if I needed to find one. Most importantly you need to get care, so call and then if they want to recommend a new doctor that’s their business. I had to see a high risk doctor but only because I wound up with high blood pressure. You can be overweight or obese and have a perfectly healthy pregnancy! And, congrats!!

I work for an OBGYN and we have NEVER turned anyone away for their weight!! I’m sorry that it’s ever happened to any woman because that is horrible! My OB is currently where i work and if anything they care more about me just being healthy in general and are supportive and would never judge for the weight! I hope you have a great experience with your appointment!

I wouldn’t. You don’t have anything to be ashamed of and frankly their reaction when you talk to them in person will tell you a lot about whether this is a provider you want to work with at all. If they are rude or lack good bedside manner it says more about them than you. 
My doctor and I had a frank discussion about my weight because I’m going to need a few extra stress tests once we get close to the due date and their clinic policy is to induce after I hit 41 weeks versus waiting till 42 over a certain BMI, but I felt like she was being up front with me so I’d know what to expect and why, not because I was being judged. 
Good luck finding your doctor! We interviewed 2 and went back to the first one because we liked her style.
