it takes time. 
you have to figure out your monthly costs. 
i got an app called "mint" that hooks up to your bank account and catergorizes your spending (like food, gas, groceries etc) and gives you a report at the end of the month. 
i kept it for a month or two before i figured out my spending habits and figured out how much i could put away each check to my savings account. it has worked very well for me, i always have money when i need  it, save an appropriate amount and still have spending money!

I use a spreadsheet template that I found in Google Docs that's a 12 month calendar that populates each month with the amount of money you will have on each day based on the income coming in and expenses you add to the calendars. It's great because I know exactly how much I will have in my pocket 3 months from now (if I stick to my budget) and I can play around with the numbers (say how much I'm going to spend on groceries, personal care, etc.) And how it will impact my bank account down the line. My husband has never used a budget so it's been great to sit down with him and look at 3-6 months of expenses and income and plan ahead for things we'd like to buy or do

I use a spreadsheet I made myself. One year per page, one month per column. Each row has expenses and savings categories. Works well for me.
