Bringing baby home with a large dog
I am looking for tips from a momma who has brought a baby home, while also having a large dog.
We have an American bulldog, Jake, and he is 2.5 years old so he is still a puppy. A giant puppy! He is 135 lbs of pure muscle. He is the sweetest dog, but he does have bursts of energy as he is still quite young. I am not worried about him hurting the baby on purpose, but he (like most big dogs) does not know his own size. He is well trained, but he can also be very stubborn as he is a bulldog.
Ever since we first got him at 8 weeks, we would stick our fingers in his mouth when he was eating, pull his ears & tail, and just poke him. He was in training for 5 months and I cannot stress enough that I am not worried about an attack!
The other day, my mom asked what we were planning on doing with Jake when the baby came and she was suggesting getting rid of him. She told her she would take him if he wasn’t so big. I told her “Not happening”. We picked his breed specifically for when our kids grow up they will have a goofy friend.
We have had friends come over with kids and babies, and he gets REALLY excited. Like. He is going to inhale that baby from sniffing so hard.
I am just wondering if anyone else has been in a similar situation, and what they did to make the transition easier on the dog, but also not stressful for mom.
Thank you so much!! ❤️
