iron deficiency anemia?

i did my glucose test yesterday, results came back and i do not have diabetes but i have iron deficiency anemia. anyone else have this? doctor said i need to take iron supplements, what else can i do to get my iron up as well as taking the vitamins?

To make sure you get enough iron, eat a well-balanced diet. Include breads, cereals, fruits, vegetables, meats and dairy products. Try cooking in cast iron pots and pans. This raises the iron content of food you prepare.
Foods with at least 2 mg iron per serving:

Beef, veal 3 oz
Clams, oysters, shrimp,
sardines 3 oz
Bran flakes ¾ cup
Cream ofWheat ½ cup
Oatmeal (fortified) ¾ cup
Baked potato with skin 1 each
Dried beans, cooked (kidney, lentils, lima, navy) ½ cup
Soybeans ½ cup
Tofu ½ cup
Spinach (canned / cooked) ½ cup
Dried prunes 4 pieces
Foods with 1 to 2 mg iron per serving:
Food Serving Size:
Poultry 3 oz
Corned beef 3 oz
Egg 1 large
Tuna 3 oz
Cooked kale 1 cup
Dried apricots 7 halves
Raisins 5 tablespoons
Whole wheat breat 1 slice

To increase iron in your diet, include choices from this list:

• Three-bean salad
• Trail mix
• Egg salad sandwich and tomato soup made with water
• Lasagna
• Hawaiian pizza
• Beef stew
• Stuffed peppers
• Peanut butter and jelly sandwich with a small glass of orange juice
• Peanut butter
• Lean meats, especially lean beef and pork
• Chicken and turkey
• Clams
• Dates
• Dried apricots
• Dried beans or peas
• Raisins
• Tuna
• Veal
• Nuts
• Whole grain breads
• Tacos
• Loaded baked potatoes
• Sardines and whole wheat crackers
• Bran flakes, Total cereals, Raisin Bran, Harmony, oatmeal with peanut butter (or nuts)
Boost absorption, not just intake:
What you eat and drink with iron-rich foods affects how much iron your body absorbs. These high vitamin C sources increase iron absorption.
• Cantaloupe
• Cauliflower
• Lemon
• Mangos
• Sweet peppers
• Pineapple
• Radishes
• Oranges – Not orange juice with calcium!
• Strawberries
• Tomatoes
These decrease iron absorption. Try not to have them at the same time you eat or drink high-iron foods and beverages.
• High calcium foods (milk and other dairy products)
• Calcium supplements
• Coffee, tea and cola

I got a prescription from my doc, I take 325mg once a day with OJ. If you want to do more than what the doc suggested you can look up iron rich foods. Off the top of my head I feel like leafy dark green veggies.

Yes I’ve just started on iron tablets 3x a day. They say beef, chicken and turkey are good for iron and dark green leafy veg including spinach, baked potatoes, whole grain bread and berries.

I just found out I have the exact same issue. My MIL recommended I drink a black bean smoothie daily until my levels go up- 
She claims that anemic people swear by this recipe in her country. Sounds weird but it’s actually very tasty! 
I have not yet been to the doctor to see if it helped but it can’t hurt. 
1/2 can of evaporated milk (I’m sure you can substitute with regular milk or non dairy) 
3/4 cup of cooked black beans 
I decided to add some ice, banana, spinach and sometimes a tad of honey and it’s so good!

I have this and can’t handle meat right now so I am eating a lot of iron fortified cereal. Most cereals are iron fortified and give you about 30% of your recommended iron. Have it with orange juice (vitamin c) to aid absorption. It makes a great snack!
