Essay in the 2nd grade??

My daughter just turned 7 years old and in the 2nd grade. She got an assignment today, she's got to write an essay on a historical figure. I was like what?! In the 2nd grade?! Craziness!

I teach 2nd grade, it's not crazy.  The essay however should and will look a lot different from what we think of, like a high school essay. It will probably be very short. If her teacher is expecting much more, then that is crazy lol. My students write "essays" all the time, I just don't call them that.

I remember doing essays a lot in elementary school. They weren't complex like you expect, they were mostly used to introduce us to real writing. You can look up essay formats online. For someone that young, it's likely supposed to be a one paragraph 'essay'. Not a multi page complex, detailed with research one like older kids are required to do. It's pretty much just
1 Topic sentence
3 detail sentences 
Closing sentence

Lol I just switched fields but used to be a teacher. Have your baby write 1 introductory sentence, 1 sentence when her figure was born, 2 sentences about what he/she did. 1 sentence about when he died, and final closing closing sentence. 
For 2nd grade, I’d expect at least that and it’s always full of grammatical errors lol but it shows the kid tried.
