I would start getting the small stuff now because it all adds up especially when you typically have to pay a deposit and everything to rent.
My husband and I just began renting a house and we didn’t have anything when we moved in except a couch, a tv, and a few other pieces of furniture. We planned on buying a new bed so we used our tax refund money on that. But all the small stuff has added up quick. Dishes, cookware, utensils, cleaning supplies, lamps, a shower rod, a shower curtain...it all gets expensive when you’re buying everything at once.

My sister-in-law was moving out within a year into her first place. Every paycheck she would buy two things. Say a toaster and knife set. She put everything away in her closet. When she moved out she had nearly everything except furniture. Good idea to get things first so the cost is spread over time.

My very first apartment, I started buying smaller stuff months in advance. It can really add up if you wait and do it all at once. You can easily get bathroom/kitchen stuff as you are waiting.
