How did you choose a sitter and feel confident that your kid was safe?

I have a 17 month old and we’re trying for baby 2 but we are in DESPERATE need for a romantic date night. My husband is a stay at home dad and we’ve never had anyone else watch our son before. We don’t have any family that would be able to sit for us, and we’re super nervous to have a stranger watch our son.

How did you find your sitter? How did you start to feel comfortable with strangers watching your kids? How do you know they aren’t serial killers or pervs or inattentive?!
