Why do white people hate being called white?
Serious question and partial rant. Just saw a Facebook post my brother made ranting about the term white and how he's not white, he's half Italian/scilian (hes not, by the way. We're more watered down than he likes to admit) so that makes him Mediterranean. He's my half brother, but on our mother's side our great grandfather migrated here from Sicily. He met our great grandmother while traveling through Mexico to get to the border and brought her along with him (he entered illegally). And on my father's side my great grandfather migrated here with his family from Germany when he was a baby. What am I? White. I am white. And I have no problems saying I'm white. I don't call myself American-Italian or American-German. I'm American. And I never really understood the desperate need to be classified as more than just white or American. I can understand wanting to learn more about your roots, but I feel this goes beyond that. Maybe I'm the one making a big deal out of this. Does anyone else constantly see white people trying to say "I'm not white, I'm [insert heritage here]"? Does it annoy you or leave you indifferent?
