Police woman moved roles due to being pregnant- do you agree?
In the U.K., a pregnant Police Officer was moved from front line duties to a desk job because she was pregnant. She has sued the Force for sex discrimination and won.
In brief, she argued that being moved from front line duties was ‘career limiting’. The Force did a risk assessment and deemed her fit for front line duties, making suggestions that she wore plain clothes and limited night shifts to help with tiredness.
In the U.K., front line duties would mean working shifts and being a response officer, attending incidents, being out on patrol, dealing with victims and suspects etc. It doesn’t say in the article what the full nature of her duties would be if she remained front line however.
A month after the risk assessment, upper management moved her to desk job which they said would be more comfortable and safer for pregnancy, which included taking statements from victims of crime and crime recording etc.
Previously she suffered a miscarriage before this pregnancy. She joined the force in 2015 and fell pregnant in 2017.
I do not agree with this at all. I am a police officer of 11 years, and currently trying for promotion. Literally the day I found out I was pregnant, I asked to go on restricted duties and haven’t been out the station since. I am taking a year off work once the baby is born. I am missing out on courses and extra work which would be contributing towards my promotion, however unfortunately being pregnant IS career limiting in this role. It was my choice to have a baby and I wouldn’t dream of trying to penalise my employer for trying to keen me safe. I am an ambitious officer but my priorities are different now. Once I’m back to work I’ll carry on with my goal to get promoted.
I think she is being incredibly selfish with this law suit. If she remained front line, she’d be putting herself, the baby, her colleagues and the public at risk. She would not be able to fulfil her role properly.
In my opinion this nothing to do with discrimination, it is just a fact of life if you are pregnant in a very hands on physical role.
What do you all think?
