Birth plan??

Question

Okay so this may be a dumb question, but can someone explain what this is?? What does it do? When do you start making one? What should I have on it? 
I tried googling it, and it was still confusing 😅

So I don’t really like calling it a birth “plan”. 
I think we all know birth is unpredictable and there’s no easy way to “plan” it. 
But you CAN have preferences for certain things.
You can learn about all of the different types of pain relief available to you, different techniques for managing pain without drugs or the epidural as well as what drugs are available to you along with the epidural. 
You can decide if you may or may not want music playing. 
Do you want delayed cord clamping?
Does your SO want to cut the cord?
If an emergency rises and you need a c-section do you want your arms tied down or left free? Do you want a clear sheet to watch the birth or a blue sheet to keep it hidden from sight? 
Do you want immediate skin to skin and breastfeeding or do you want to have baby bathed first?
All of these things you CAN have a say over, even if an emergency happens. All of these things you should educate yourself on, so that if you need to make a decision you know what’s going on and can make an informed one. You can also change your mind at any time during labor— just because it’s on your birth plan doesn’t mean you have to stick to it. If it comes up and you decide that what’s on the birth plan isn’t going to work for you and baby, that’s ok! At least your informed enough to make that decision! 
You can also learn about each thing and decide that you don’t want to make an immediate decision. I have very few things set in stone “this is how I want this to go”. Most of it, I’m knowledgeable on, and will make whatever decision is best at the time I need to make that call, because who knows if I’ll feel the same way about it in the moment that I do now.

It’s just a general idea of how you would like your birth to go. But keep in mind that a lot of it can change depending on circumstances. I didn’t want meds or epidural- unless I changed my mind. I had my midwife put a warm compress on my hemorrhoids while pushing so they didn’t get worse. I also had it in my plan for a mole to removed down there lol 
Delayed cord clamp, and no visitors till my partner and I both got an hour of skin to skin.

I didn't have a birth plan with my first. I trusted that my doctor and I would make the right choice. After 3 days of laboring, without an epidural, we opted for a C-section. I trusted my doctor and my recovery was a piece of cake.
Since I had a C-section with my first, I'll have a C-section with my second.
