Anyone else?

Question

Ever get emotional about breast feeding? Long story short, my grandma never breast fed any of her 7 kids, so my mom never breastfed us... like none of my cousins breastfed and neither did my sister when she had my nephew.. so when I had my baby (he’s almost 5 months) I didn’t plan on breastfeeding, but at the hospital he latched on great and it’s been smooth sailing since then (he’s almost 20 lbs! 😳)
My family has never been supportive of it and it often hurts my feelings but I’m not sure why. I have heard comments such as 
“You wouldn’t have to worry about breastfeeding in public if you just gave him formula”
“You know, he wouldn’t be so clingy to you if you weren’t breastfeeding” 
“I hope you stop breastfeeding him when he gets teeth, that’s gross” 
Etc.. it almost makes me cry sometimes. I enjoy the bonding with him and it just happens to work best for our family. This is more of a rant I guess but wondering if anyone else ever gets judged for it?

Lots of women from older generations have a thing against breastfeeding. They were shamed out of doing it, so they think it’s gross and unnatural. Try to brush it off, you know you’re doing what’s best for you and your baby. They’re just not as educated as you are 💕

This is crazy! Your family is totally in the wrong! Feed your baby wherever/whenever he wants.  You should be proud you are breastfeeding! Fed is best 💕💕

Exactly how my family responded. I was 18 and breastfed my daughter from day one. And my grandma said the same things and that it was “inappropriate” literally one time at my daughters check up was arguing with the doctor about it it was so embarrassing I had to kick her out cause my daughter is my child and I make all the decisions about her. 
Unfortunately you have to just tune them out and change the conversation cause what you are doing is the best thing for your child.

When I had my 1st I was unable to breastfeed (only lasted a week) and I had it in my mind that I’d see how it went but then when I couldn’t I felt so shitty for a few weeks because I thought I failed. now with my second child I’ve managed to breastfeed for 3 months so far and my husband is trying to be supportive but I can tell it’s hard on him because when my son cries he likes the boob for comfort and cluster feeds, especially at night and my husband doesn’t have boobs so it frustrates him that he can’t calm him down easily (especially if I’m busy with our 1st son and he has put littlest one). He’s suggested formula a few times when I’ve struggled/my sons had trouble latching and I’ve had a moment of frustration/feeling defeated but I’ve tried not to take it personally that he wants me to fail, I’ve taken it as he’s worried about my mental health as he knows the toll it took on me the 1st time when I struggled in vain to do it and he hates seeing me sad when there’s an easy fix available.

that's so crazy to me. family or not, they need to keep those rude comments to themselves and maybe have an open mind. 
you are providing your child with tons of health benefits, nutrients, and it's FREEEEEEE.

Brush it off girl! Mine and my husbands family was pretty much the same way...only commenting more so about having to supplement because they didn’t think that breastmilk was going to be enough🙄
11 months later I’m still going strong and the bond I have with my son is something unexplainable and amazing!! It’s your baby and your choice! I know it’s hard to listen to all the time but hang in there and know you’re doing the absolute best for your baby!!

My Mum bf us but only for a short while and she often spoke about how her mum was unsupportive of it and would make her leave the room etc when feeding. It really bothered her. When I started bf she was really supportive in the beginning but once I got to 6 months she started telling me I should wean and asking how long it would go on for 🤷🏻‍♀️ people don’t like when family make different choices and feel it’s somehow a criticism/rejection of what they would do. It’s also possible that they thought they might be more involved but bf (esp when they’re little) makes Momma number 1.  Just find your stubborn self and continue to do what works for you. Well done on your journey so far ☺️
