Have sex or not to have sex

I've been with my boyfriend for a year in half now, we've only had sex once a few months ago. We both want to have sex again and we both love each other. His birthday is coming up in oct. should I just wait until his birthday comes to have sex or just have sex with him soon. We talk about sex all the time and what we would do to each other we send sext messages & we kiss but that's about it
