Godparents??

I've never fully understood this concept honestly.  I was 18 when I had my son an my best friend and my husband at the times friend were the "godparents," but it never really meant anything.  
Is it a serious concept anymore? I've heard they are chosen as who would take the kids if both parents died suddenly, but i assume legally that would normally be a grandparent or other relative....
What does a godparent mean to you? Are you even choosing one or is it kind of a dead tradition? I've had a few friends mention wanting to be this babies but is it just an honorary title? A popularity contest? Something actually religious?

The concept of "godparents" has religious roots. The godparents are charged with a special duty to help counsel and mentor the child, and will continue that duty if anything where to happen to the parents or not.

Personally, my husband and I have chosen to create a will which names who the legal guardians of our child(ren) would be in the event of our deaths. This also requires these individuals agree and sign paperwork that the court would uphold in the event of a custody battle. Some people call these guardians "godparents" even though it has no religious significance.

We have godparents for our children and it's the same couple for all of them.  For us it is someone who would take our children in as their own and raise them the way we would of wanted God forbid something happens to both of us.  Both of our parents are older and aren't in the condition to be able to raise three young boys and neither of our sisters are married or have the financial means to take on three more children.  To us it's a big deal and they are very involved in our children's lives even though we have now moved to a different state.  We have put it in a will that they would take custody of our children

I feel like that's what its becoming in this society, a popularity contest or honorary title. In my family, however, we still uphold Godparents/ children as something sacred. The Godparents in our lives and our children's lives are responsible for encouraging, teaching, and uplifting our relationship to God. They are usually an aunt or uncle, but sometimes are a close friend who, themselves, have a very close bond with God. Usually birthday and Christmas gifts are tokens of a small cross, first Bible, etc. If something were to happen to my husband and I our children will go to either of our parents, but the Godparents will continue to maintain their responsibility and are usually deemed "next in line" if the grandparents can't take the kids for some reason.

For our son we baptized him through the catholic church and chose one god parent my bf older sister. They are suppose to be there for the child and be a positive role model and step in if need be. Someone close and trusted.

My brother and his wife are godparents to our son (and will be to this child too).  We have it in our will that our kids will go to them if we pass.

For us it is who will take the kid/kids if something happened to us.   Our parents are all older so we don't want them to go to them.   Our siblings either don't have/want kids or already have multiple of their own.   We don't want our kids to end up being a burden for someone, we want them to be loved and taken in as if they were always there.

I am Lutheran and we so godparents/sponsors when children are baptized. The meaning behind it is so there is someone (we usually choose 3) in the Child's life who will help them stay in tuned with our faith and teachings. For birthdays and Christmas, the godparent will usually give a gift that has a faith based background---books, Bible, cross necklace, etc. 
we do not say it is "legally binding" if the parents were to pass. It would all be based on what a will says. Usually one of the people who is a godparent is the child's ain't or uncle so it might end up being one of them, but not always.

We are catholic and it is taken very seriously and is legal binding. In the case me and my husband die then my daughter will go to her God parents to be raised.

Godparents are usually in the catholic religion. It's good to write a will and say who will have the kids if you die because if you don't, the kids will go to the state and they will decide who gets to keep them. It's better to write a will with who you want as the "god parents" in case you ever pass away because then they have to go to whoever you wanted them to go to.
