Do I need to sand a grey crib before painting?

Yes you will need to sand so I would seriously reconsider. 
I love to upcycle things and recently repainted a glider. It has lots of pieces but still less than a crib and it was NOT worth it!
It is a ton of work to sand all of those nooks, get the dust out, and get it all painted to look nice. 
Like I said, I usually love this kind of stuff but I would not recommend doing a crib (or glider)!

If the paint has any sort of gloss, painting over it without sanding may cause it to not stick.
