Managing a delayed miscarriage

Jill • Pro-choice athiest ex-pat, mum of a beautiful boy born nov 2016

I had a scan yesterday at 10 +5 and could see a gestational sac with a yolk sac and fetal pole but there was no heartbeat. I was told I'm having a delayed miscarriage and was given the option to either wait and let it happen naturally or have a surgical procedure under local anaesthetic called manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) . I am devastated and just don't know what to do.

My first instinct is to go with the natural option because I generally don't like medical interventions and the idea of lying on a table awake while the MVA is carried out is quite scary and I imagine traumatic. On the other hand I'm told the natural option can take weeks and be really painful and that sometimes it doesn't all come out naturally so you end up having to go in for a surgical option in the end anyway so perhaps the MVA is better because it gets it all over with.

Can anyone offer advice? What would / did you do?
