Virginity! (Read description)

So me and my boyfriend have been dating for over a year now (about a year and a half) and in our last year of high school. I’m 17 and he’s 18 and yes I love him very much. So we have waited to lose our virginity (we’re both virgin) because we wanted it to be special and definitely after our one year anniversary. I plan on starting my birth control soon and don’t know if I should lose it before or after. I’ve talked to my mom and I know she’ll ask why I need it (she’ll be fine though because she knows how far we’ve gone) but I just feel like it will be weird if I say I need birth control before I lose my virginity. Like what if I hate sex? Then it will be pointless. I just need a second opinion. Thanks for reading!
