When do doctors typically start checking for dilation?

Only when I asked. At around 38 weeks last time but they try to avoid checking as it's not any indication of progress. With my daughter I was at a 3 for weeks

My doctor uses a speculum to look at my cervix every appointment. Then she just puts in my notes that it's closed. She says physical exams to check dilation before labor starts are outdated and unnecessary (and possibly harmful!).

I agree with the other person that it depends on if you are having preterm labor signs.... I was so she checked me at my 32w appointment and has me coming in weekly now and will check me again tomorrow but usually if no problems and your dr does checks it’s around 36w. Some people opt out of them and some drs just don’t do them at all but you can ask

My doctor never did checks with my first.. I don’t think she’ll do this time..

Depends on if you are having - preterm labor like symptoms or not
But I started getting checked 2 weeks ago because I was having lots of cramping and mucous plug like discharge.. found out I’m dilated to a 1 and. 30 % effaced.. so now I go in weekly to be monitored.. (previous 30 weeker) 
Oh and currently 30weeks and 4days
