I’ve always wondered this. Does it make a difference if the baby does not drink the colostrum? Is it okay to get a head start on storing milk? Can I build up my supply more by pumping before she gets here?

You can hand express and save the colostrum in case your baby would be born early or need to stay in the NICU. But most of the time there’s no need. You won’t run out of colostrum by doing this and you won’t produce more milk because the placenta has to detach in order for your milk to be signaled to come in. Along with baby stimulating your breasts. It’s really up to you but I’d talk to your doctor because it could send you into preterm labor. But doing so at 39-40 weeks isn’t that much of a risk I don’t think. Like I said consult with your doctor.

you can cause labor to begin...... you should not pump while pregnant. your milk will not come in until day 3 or 5 and the baby will get the colostrum it needs when they're born.
