“Bonus” child

It makes me cringe when I read or hear someone referring to their stepchild as a bonus child.

I get what they are going for, but to me it just sounds like the kid is a prize won at a carnival or something. Usually just saying something like, “My husband’s daughter” works if you have a negative connotation with stepchild.

I can’t imagine telling another adult with a straight face about my bonus child. Anyone else think this term is just cringe? 😒
