Are contractions only considered contractions if they hurt and you feel them?

Because I went to the er had ALOT of back pain and seemed as though I was having contractions but because I wasn’t feeling them in my stomach they weren’t real.

With my son I had the nurse come in and ask me if I was feeling any contractions. I said no, she was surprised since I was having them the whole time I was hooked up. I was only 1cm dialated so obviously I went home and remained pregnant for 3 more weeks.

You can def have contactions and not feel them.
