Why do some "grandparents"

Question

Why do some "grandparents" want nothing to do with their grandchildren? Like literally nothing. No birthdays. No holidays. Could care less if another one was born. Like they're fine acknowledging their own children (on bdays and holidays) but want nothing to do with their children's children....

My second grand child was just born and I admit I haven't been just THRILLED over it.  I mean I posted a pic of her and I told my son how adorable she is but I just can't help feeling like he and his gf were idiots and that they actually tried to have a baby right now. They can't even take care of themselves.  My son has 26 more credits to graduate with his college degree and now he's talking about taking a year off!  I'm saying all this to say that it's not necessarily the grandchild, but the circumstances....not that this is any excuse for not being an attentive or excited grandparent....only that I'm not feeling it right now.  I did get them all the baby stuff, except the car seat.

My boyfriends mom is an amazing grandmother, my mom isn't. Her great grandma (my grandma) is also amazing. She has no grandfather since my dad passed away and daddies dad is not in the picture. I don't know why my mother isn't more involved. We live in different states but she doesn't even bother to call or text me. She got all mad a few weeks ago cause I always post the stuff family and friends buy for my daughter, so she claims everything she's thought of buying I already have and she thinks that I should be calling her. Ya I've got a 3 month old to care for, 2 dogs and a house to keep up after but I need to remember to call her 😐😐

My MIL doesn't acknowledge our son at all. Won't even say hi. I don't care she is a nightmare. She was a piece of crap mom and even a worse grandma.

I honestly can't answer that. Since having my daughter I've wondered the same thing about my own mother who walked out when I was 11 and never looked back. It hurts to think about them not caring. But In the long run it's a good thing, because you don't want weak people like that in your child's life. Because they won't be kind to them. I think of it as a blessing in disguise

My parents flip flop between demanding grandchildren and saying to shut my legs. They think I'm a terrible person and don't wish to see my offspring. Then sometimes they say they want to quit their jobs, retire and be full time care takers of my not even here yet kids.

Because My mother (who is my adoptive mother) is a horrible person who physically abused my 2 younger sisters and mentally and emotionally abused me. She thinks that because we're all grown and outta the house that she can pretend like it never happened. I'm willing to talk to her and tell her how my child is but I'm not gonna go out of my way to do so. Maybe if she called a few times and showed some interest I might start calling her. She never called me during my pregnancy and wasn't even excited for me when I announced either time, never called to check up on me after my miscarriage and has never once asked if I need anything for my daughter. I guess I should have said all this in my original comment.

My grandma was barely involved. She would sit and watch a movie with us every month. We wouldn't talk much. 
I'm very happy to say I had adoptive grandparents who were fully involved in my life. Not legally but they really acted like it. They took me on trips, took me to do fun stuff and paid my way always.

I have a friend who got pregnant out of wedlock and her dad almost wanted to disown her......he's THAT much of a Catholic and she went against how he raised her. Her mom wasn't happy but didn't consider "disowning" her. After the baby was born it took a really long time for her dad, but he eventually came around and loves his grandson. She got pregnant right out of high school and raised him alone, but she also finished college, now has a great job, and is married with two other kids (one of the kids from hubby's previous relationship.) I think sometimes the grandparents get scared about the situation a child is born in to and don't want to be too much of a safety net for the parents to take advantage of and it takes time for everyone involved to prove otherwise.

One can only guess why some grandparents act that way....

In our case, my parents weren't perfect but did the best they could at the time. In my opinion, if my mom would've gotten counseling, she may not have sunk into a deep depression and abandoned my little sister and me. My dad cared more about having a girlfriend than spending time with his kids. Eventually, these issues were resolved, and though they made mistakes, they're wonderful grandparents.

DH's on the other hand are rotten to the core. Abusive, spiteful, neglectful, prejudiced, toxic, racists. They drove their youngest son to drug use and he only speaks to them for money to feed his drug habit. DH had severe bi-polar issues but has been under control since we started dating. Their ideas of spending time with their grandchildren were attempting to fill them with the same lies and poison they tried to fill their children with. Then they wondered why our kids recoiled in fear and screamed when they came near them. 😖 Same for DH's nieces and nephew. Sigh... DH's decision to severe ties was definitely for the best.

My granny is married to a man (9years) who is a fantastic great grandpa (pawpaw) to my daughter. However, he has 16 other grandchildren and one other great grandchild and only knows 3 of their names. 
My dad will come over and spend time with my daughter but once he's gone he's gone and wants nothing to do with us
