Latching?

How long do it take for you to get the proper latch my baby is a month old and we have Been exclusively breastfeeding it took two weeks to get a good latch now it seems like her latch is not good enough I’m starting to think my Areola is to big idk trying not to give up any advice, tips ?

Answer

Having the whole areola in isn’t necessary and doesn’t indicate if latch is good or not.  You just want to have enough in so baby is not nipple feeding, sucking like on a straw.  The idea is for the nipple to be pointed into roof of mouth so the tongue can suction well and roll the tongue on the part of the areola right below nipple. If you are in pain a few weeks out- go consult with a lactation consultant or see someone to check for tongue tie.  If baby is tongue tied, they can’t lift tongue well enough to remove milk efficiently so they just suck hard, chomp and lose suction (hear clicking).

My son is almost 5 months old and he still doesn't cover my entire areola. If you tickle her cheek or wait until she opens her mouth really wide, shove what you can inside.
